Life on Earth depends heavily on its magnificent and complex ocean ecosystems. But the ocean is suffering from overfishing, pollution, loss of habitat—such as coral reefs—and the depletion of important species from sharks to small fish that are the basis for the entire food web.
As a major ocean pollution, plastic is affecting every parts of the ocean and every marine life. Plastic is a costly, pervasive, destructive over the short and long-term (500 years), and growing problem worldwide. Further, plastic production, collection, and disposal are also major sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
Endangered Species International’s ocean work includes daily efforts to remove plastics, conduct awareness activities at coastal communities, create marine reserves, end illegal fishing and protect endangered marine species.
As an individual, family, or community, you can greatly reduce or eliminate the use of most plastics in everyday life. Notably, it is proven that reducing plastic production and consumption is the largest lever, and would lessen plastic waste in the ocean. In addition, we can to join forces together. Plastic is interlaced with nearly every aspect of human life, from plastic bags and food packages to car parts and cellphones. But once it enters the ocean, plastic can remain there for hundreds of years, breaking down into even smaller pieces that are more costly and difficult to remove. The plastic is also deadly to marine life, who mistake it for food and starve as it fills their stomach.
As of 2017, factories had produced a cumulative 8.3 billion metric tons of new plastic, and only 9 percent of that amount has ever been recycled. Plastic packaging and single-use items enter the waste stream immediately after use and account for 61 percent of the litter scattered across beaches. But debris can be found in just about every corner of the ocean, including remote islands, the two poles, and even the deep seafloor. During our ocean plastic cleanup activities, we have removed mostly single-use items (70 percent) such as bottles, lighters, and straws. For the last three years, we have removed an average of 500 pounds of plastics per day from the ocean, raised awareness about the danger of plastic pollution to about 20,000 coastal communities, and make thousands of community’s leaders as plastic warriors.
How efficient is Endangered Species International?
With our nature conservation spending representing 98% of total expenses (fundraising made up only 1%, administration for only 1%), you can count on us to make wise and effective use of your donations. If you donate $50, then we can permanently remove and properly dispose 500 pounds (230 kg) of plastics from the ocean and educate 50 coastal residents in southeast Asia. Your entire donation will be used for our plastic warriors to do the job to clean up the ocean and prevent plastics entering it.
