The ocean’s future is simply our future

Creating and supporting marine protected areas. Marine protected areas working but at risks

We must relieve the pressures on the ocean so it can bounce back and can continue to sustain us. Warming, acidification, overfishing and pollution increasingly threaten the ocean’s ability to sustain us, as our demands on it—for food, energy and water—continue to mount.Though the ocean is one of our greatest allies against climate change, absorbing most of the excess heat and carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, it has been paying a steep price.

One crucial way to help the ocean is to create marine protected areas. Marine protected areasallow fish populations rebound and protect threatened coral reef ecosystems. However, in some cases, protected areas are failing to help because they are too small or are just protected areas on papers. We are working hard to change that.

The stakes have never been higher. That is why Endangered Species International (ESI) is supporting the world’s goal to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030 and by helping directly local communities to manage effected marine protected areas and protecting coral reefs in the Coral Triangle. The Coral Triangle is located in the western Pacific Ocean harboring 76% of all known coral species in the world.

To contribute to that goal by 2030, we intend with other groups to conserve 4 billion hectares—that is more than 10% of the world’s ocean area—while working with local communities on solutions that help to recover and protect one of the most endangered ecosystems on the planet: coral reefs and their inhabitants like sharks and sea turtles.

Protecting coral reefs 365 days

ESI have been deeply involved in protecting and restoring coral reefs since 2008 in the Coral Triangle. ESI has been working in many fronts to promote effective coral reef and ocean conservation via strong innovative educational activities, law enforcement, creation of effective marine protected areas, reduction of harmful pollutants and sediments flushing into oceans, coral monitoring, coastal cleaning up, and planting and caring for mangrove trees. ESI has partnered with many groups including CMA CGM Group to restore and protect coral reefs.

Our vision of 30 % of the ocean protected is possible. Our vision of aclean and prosperous ocean is possible. Together possible. JOIN US.
