Dear Friends,
Like you, we love Nature, we love life and all animals, we love forest and oceans.
In the past few years, animal declines (including insects) have been clearly documented around the globe, including western and northern Europe, North America, neotropical countries such as Costa Rica and Puerto Rico, and even the High Arctic. The world’s wildlife populations have fallen by 70%.
The amount of money that governments use to subsidize fossil fuels or build bombs is crying betrayal of humanity’s priorities like saving Nature and ensuring a living planet for current and future generations. Meanwhile conservation is living off scraps in comparison, and nature is being put to the sword. Countries around the world fall short of U.N. pledge to protect 10% of the ocean by 2020 (5-6% of the oceans is now protected). We must protect 30% of the oceans by 2030. Tropical forests presently cover about 2.4 billion hectares or about 16% of Earth's land surface. Brazil continues deforesting and burning the Amazon at an alarming rate. We must protect 50% of rainforest by 2030. We are frantically running out of time to turn this around. It is time we put rainforests, oceans, animals, and life first.
That’s why Endangered Species International exists, so we can do the urgent work together without relying on repeated unrealized promises from governments. In the last 10 years, Endangered Species International did not fall short in protecting endangered animals and plants, rainforest and ocean. With your support, we will continue to advance our conservation work on the ground.
Our goal is to double the number of real protected areas (ocean and land) we have created in the last 10 years and to be managed the with real enforcement (not a paper park). It is hard work of creating and maintaining effective protected areas: endless meetings, buying boats or infrared cameras, educating people, paying for salaries so we can patrol and monitor the area to ensure it actually protects animals and ecosystems. These protections allow all life forms to regenerate and increase the amount and diversity of all animals in the protected areas, while still allowing some local people to make a living. Absorbing huge amounts of greenhouse gases, protected areas are one of the most effective tools we have in tackling the climate crisis.
In coming year filled with challenges, your generous support to wildlife, nature, and people around the world is the backbone of our group. More than ever, we are truly thankful to you. Thank you for being the voice for animals and plants, thank you for joining us.
